Before getting into this Ritz-Carlton Koh Samui review, it is worth setting the expectation. This is not a small hotel trying to be charming. It is a large, established luxury resort with a strong brand name, a dramatic setting and prices that naturally create a high bar. The question is not whether the property has impressive moments. It does. The question is whether the overall stay feels as consistent as the name suggests.

For me, the answer was mixed in a way that is important to explain carefully. There were beautiful parts of the resort, generous rooms, warm individual service moments and one restaurant that genuinely stood out. At the same time, a few operational and maintenance details made the experience feel less seamless than expected at this level.

First impression and location

The resort sits on a former coconut plantation and stretches across roughly 58 acres with views over the Gulf of Thailand. It is only about ten minutes from Samui International Airport, which makes arrival very easy. Despite that short transfer, the property quickly feels removed from the airport and from the busier parts of the island.

Check-in was quick and efficient. Room Manager Ash stopped by to introduce himself and explain a few details about the resort, which gave the arrival a personal note. Afterwards, Emmi, our host, took us to the suite by golf cart and gave us a short tour of the grounds on the way. That first impression was polished, calm and very much in line with what I would expect from Ritz-Carlton.

Suite and comfort

The Ritz-Carlton Koh Samui has 175 rooms, suites and pool villas set within the tropical landscape. The accommodations combine local architectural references with modern resort comfort, and even the suites start at a generous size. Many villas add oversized terraces and wide sea views.

My Essential Suite measured 95 square meters and looked out over a very well-kept garden. The design was modern with Thai influences, and the size was one of the clear strengths. I also liked the flexible room dividers, which make it possible to separate living, sleeping and bathroom areas. That is useful if one person still wants to work while the other is already winding down.

The Essential Suite combines sleeping and living areas with sliding dividers and a broad terrace outlook.

One detail felt less flexible: the air conditioning was set to 22 degrees by default, and any adjustment required a technician. It is not a major issue, but in a suite at this level I would expect temperature control to be simpler and more intuitive.

Although the resort grounds were generally well maintained, the suite had a few details that stood out more because of the price point: rusty areas in the shower, damaged shelving in the bathroom, small cleaning issues and more noise transfer than expected. At night, doors, corridor movement and neighboring rooms were more noticeable than ideal. The three floors without an elevator were manageable for us, but not something every guest will enjoy.

Dining

Eight restaurants and bars sound like a lot of freedom. The resort offers southern Thai cuisine at Pak Tai, international classics at Sea Salt, breakfast at Shook!, Mediterranean options, steak, seafood and poolside drinks. In practice, it is worth planning ahead. Restaurants require reservations, and spontaneous dining is not always easy. Even trying to reserve the Thai restaurant at 3 p.m. for the same evening was not possible.

The breakfast restaurant is large and offers a broad mix of local and western dishes. The selection was good, but the experience did not always feel as smooth as I would have expected. Coffee sometimes took a long time, and not every team member was equally comfortable in English. None of this ruined the stay, but at this level these smaller frictions become more noticeable.

Food and beverage pricing is high, as expected for this category, but at times it felt a little disproportionate. Even simple extras, such as additional rice, made the pricing feel more visible than it needed to be. Pak Tai, however, was excellent and one of the strongest parts of the stay.

Pool, beach and activities

The resort places a clear focus on wellness and activities: Spa Village Koh Samui, a fitness center, a Muay Thai ring, tennis, swimming, kayaking and an artificial swim reef with more than 50 fish species. On paper, this is an impressive offering, and it makes the property appealing for guests who want more than just a pool chair.

The beach was fine for a short swim, though a little rocky in places. During my stay, it did not always feel as carefully maintained as I would have expected from the positioning of the resort. With more consistent daily attention, this area could feel significantly stronger.

The pool area was more mixed. It is nicely designed, but at times it felt crowded, which reduced the sense of calm. The behavior of some guests around the pool also did not always match the atmosphere the hotel is trying to create. On the positive side, sunscreen was freely available, and some team members were very warm. Chris at the pool bar deserves a special mention for his friendly and engaging service.

At the same time, the service around the pool did not always feel as proactive as expected. A clearer towel service, more consistent greetings or more visible attention would have helped. The pool itself also showed a few maintenance issues, including loose tiles. These are small details, but they influence the overall impression in a resort at this price point.

Service

There were very good personal service moments. Ash and Emmi made the arrival feel professional and welcoming. Kate from housekeeping was also consistently friendly and always had a smile. These interactions matter because they add warmth and show what the resort can do well.

What was less consistent was the overall rhythm. In some areas, service felt less attentive than I expected from Ritz-Carlton. It was not about one major failure, but about a series of small moments: waiting times, limited initiative, a crowded pool area or beach details that remained visible. This is where the difference between a good resort stay and a truly seamless luxury experience becomes clear.

Final verdict

The Ritz-Carlton Koh Samui has many ingredients for a memorable stay: a beautiful setting, a large resort landscape, spacious accommodation, several strong service moments and a genuinely excellent dinner at Pak Tai. Guests looking for a full-service resort with a major luxury brand behind it will find a lot to like.

At the same time, the price and brand set very high expectations. That is why the crowded pool, beach maintenance, room details and uneven service rhythm stood out more than they might elsewhere. I would not rule the resort out, but I would book it consciously: as a large, polished, brand-led resort rather than as a completely flawless island hideaway.

My recommendation is to check the room category, location within the resort and current rates carefully before booking. For guests who value space, brand, resort facilities and a broad activity offering, The Ritz-Carlton Koh Samui can work well. Travelers looking for total quiet, perfect beach service and a more intimate boutique feeling should compare carefully.

Quick Verdict

An impressive resort with a beautiful setting and strong individual moments, though not every detail feels as consistent as the brand and price suggest.

Best for: Travelers looking for a spacious luxury resort with a strong brand, many facilities and a broad activity offering.

Watch out for: Pool crowding, beach maintenance, room details, restaurant reservations and food and beverage pricing.

Booking tip: Choose the room category and location carefully, and reserve restaurants early.
